Background of the study
Traditional oral literature, including folktales, proverbs, and epic narratives, plays a central role in preserving Igbo cultural heritage. These oral traditions influence phonological structures by perpetuating specific pronunciation patterns, intonation, and rhythmic styles unique to Igbo storytelling (Okeke, 2023). In Igbo communities, the recitation of oral literature reinforces phonological features that might otherwise be altered by contact with dominant languages. This study appraises the impact of traditional oral literature on the phonological structures of Igbo by analyzing recordings of oral performances from various cultural events. Acoustic analysis is used to examine features such as vowel quality, stress patterns, and melodic intonation, which are integral to the delivery of oral literature. The study also considers how these phonological structures contribute to the overall aesthetic and communicative effectiveness of the narratives, preserving cultural identity and language continuity (Ibrahim, 2024). The findings will support efforts to incorporate traditional oral literature into language teaching and preservation initiatives, ensuring that essential phonological features are maintained across generations.
Statement of the problem
Despite its cultural significance, the influence of traditional oral literature on Igbo phonological structures is under-documented. Variations in phonological patterns during oral recitations are rarely analyzed systematically, hindering efforts to preserve these linguistic features (Chinwe, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how traditional practices shape phonology and complicates the development of educational materials that reflect authentic Igbo speech. The study aims to address these issues by providing detailed acoustic data and analysis of oral performances, thus informing language preservation and teaching strategies.
